Using Monitor

Optimising use
  • Accurately identify weeds
  • Integrate cultural controls, particularly stale seedbeds and break-cropping
  • Apply Monitor when weeds and crop are actively growing in moist soils
  • Always use an appropriate adjuvant at the recommended rate
  • Use Monitor in mixture and sequence with other herbicides as required (see tank mix compatibility guidance)
Mixing and Spraying

Apply Monitor through an hydraulic sprayer

Preparation for Use

Monitor quantity required should be carefully measured in the container supplied.  Use the measuring container to measure out 25g of product, equivalent to the dose for one hectare.  Any remaining herbicide should be resealed in the initial container and stored in a dry place.  Add clean water to the spray tank until half full, add the required amount of Monitor, wash and rinse the container thoroughly when empty, adding the washings to the spray tank.  Add the required amount of surfactant, and top up with water to the required level

Agitate the spray liquid continuously before spraying.  Apply immediately

Volume

Apply in a volume rate of 200/250 litres/hectare as a medium spray (BCPC category)
Good, even spray coverage of weeds is essential.  Ensure that sprayed swaths do not overlap.

Spray tank cleaning

To avoid subsequent damage to crops other than winter wheat, thoroughly clean all spray equipement immediately after spraying Monitor, including inside and outside of lid, using All Clear Extra sprayer cleaner according to the label instructions.

Alternatively use the following procedure:
  1. Immediately after spraying, drain tank completely.  Any contamination on the outside of the spraying equipment should be removed by washing with clean water
  2. Rinse inside of tank with clean water and flush through booms and hoses using at least one-tenth of the spray volume.  Drain tank completely
  3. Half-fill tank with clean water and add 1/3 litre household ammonia (contains 9.5% ammonia) for each 100 litres of tank volume.  (Equivalent amounts of alternate strength ammonia solution can be used providing the final concentration in the full tank is 0.03%).  Agitate and then flush the boom and hoses with the cleaning solution.  Top up with water making sure the tank is completely full and allow to stand for 15 minutes with agitation.  Again flush the boom and hoses and drain tank completely
  4. Nozzles and filters should be removed and cleaned separately with ammonia solution at the same concentration as used in the sprayer
  5. Rinse the tank with clean water and flush through the boom and hoses using at least one-tenth of the spray tank volume.  Drain tank completely
  6. For the disposal of washings, follow the Code of Practice for using Plant Protection Products,  Do not spray onto sensitive land or land intended for cropping with sensitive crop

Note: If it is not possible to drain the tank completely, step 3 must be repeated before going on to step 4.

Monitor is widely compatible with most growth regulators, fungicides and many broad-leaved herbicides.

The product is rainfast four hours after application. Rain falling immediately after application may reduce the level of control.

LERAP

Monitor is LERAP category B, a LERAP assessement must be carried out prior to application alongside watercourses.

Restrictions

Unless clear from the label or Tank Mix Guide, DO NOT mix Monitor without consulting Monsanto, to avoid incompatibility/antagonistic effects resulting in poor weed control.

Check minimum periods before and after Monitor use for other product applications

Avoid applying Monitor to crops under stress in including severe drought, waterlogging, frost and strong, cold winds.

Avoid extremes of acidity in the spray volume. A pH between 6 and 8 is preferred for optimum efficacy. Use buffers to rectify spray pH where appropriate.

Monitor can be used in Triticale and Rye under SOLA 0989/2006.  Before applying chemicals under a SOLA check with the Pesticides Safety Directorate.
