Control of Bindweed with (Calystegia spp, convolvulus arvensis) Roundup Pro Biactive

 

Background

 

Species:	Hedge Bindweed (Bellbine):	Calystegia  sepium , C.silvatica or C.pulchra
	Field Bindweed:	Convolvulus arvense

 

These species are all climbing/trailing/scrambling herbaceous perennials with bell-shaped white or pink flowers and triangular leaves. They are all troublesome garden weeds, spreading over railways, waste ground and in hedgerows and fields. The species are widespread with Bellbine preferring damp areas like marshes and river banks and Field Bindweed occurring most widely on calcareous or neutral soils in the south of Great Britain.

Propagation

Bindweed spreads mainly by swollen underground roots or rhizomes. Fragments of broken rhizomes root readily and can spread when soil is moved.

Spread by seed is only important with Field Bindweed, which is self pollinating.  The Calystegia species are self infertile and rely on long-tongued insects for any cross- pollination.

Control With Roundup Pro Biactive

 

Established shoots:	Treat at maximum growth, around flowering in July - August   before die-back.
New growth among garden plants:	Treat when 10-20cm growth (before it climbs plants) need to treat regularly as shoots appear, from late April - September Or Grow up canes which can be pulled away from shrubs etc so that the spray is safely directed onto the weed.

 

Caution: First treatment may cause even more shoots to appear, since it breaks the dormancy of underground buds.

 

Remember always to take a planned and programmed approach to weed control in such areas – one well timed application may kill off all those weeds present but if no follow-up activity is carried out weeds will simply re-infest the area and within a few years it will have reverted to its original state.
