Barren Brome


Barren Brome (Bromus Sterilis)

Annual or biennial, grows from 30cm up to 90cm.

 
 
 
 

Character:  Solitary or tufted grass usually slender, turning from green to a reddish purple as it matures. 

Flower:  It has an open panicle with spreading, branches.  The spikelets hang down and have between 4 and 10 flowers with long awns. 

Significance:  Barren Brome has become a major problem weed, causing yield loss and crop lodging where infestations are high.  One plant can shed up to 2,000 seeds, and if left untreated will cause a major infestation in the following crop.
