Rough Stalked Meadow Grass

Rough Stalked Meadow Grass (Poa trivialis)

Perennial, grows between 30cm and 90cm high.

Character:  It is a loose tufted grass which is taller than Annual Meadow-grass, and has a stronger green colour.  Stolons encourage the spread of Rough Stalked Meadow-grass.

Flower:  The flower is branched and generally open, but it can sometimes be tight and dense.  Each spikelet is approximately 2 to 4 flowers which are easily dispersed once it reaches maturity.

Significance:  It is generally recognised at the flowerhead stage in winter cereals.  It can also grow without producing flowering heads which can lead to it being incorrectly identified as Black-grass.
