Rates and Timings

Rates

All recommendations are based around the optimum use of a full rate of 25g/ha of Monitor. Apply the product at medium spray quality through a hydraulic sprayer in a water volume of 200-250 litres/ha. Always apply with a recommended ethoxylated tallow amine surfactant, eg Frigate.

Timing

Both weeds and the crop should be actively growing for best results.  Avoid periods of frost and cold winds.  But there is no need to panic as the level of Brome control with Monitor does not drop rapidly after the end of tillering as with other Brome herbicides, so you can afford to wait for good growing conditions.

Barren/Sterile Brome or Italian Rye-grass

There are two timings for application, depending on the desired results:

Early:  For highest yield response and lodging control

Apply at the end of crop tillering/ear at 1cm (GS 30). This timing is recommended for heavy or widespread field infestations, which have the greatest potential to reduce yield. Monitor can be tank-mixed with many T0 fungicides and growth regulators for flexibility.

Late:  For highest reduction in seed return

Apply from second node (GS 32) to flag-leaf  ligule just visible (GS 37), and latest GS 39. Monitor can be tank-mixed with many fungicides used at T1 or T2.  This timing is recommended for:
  • Headlands (Including Conservation Headlands e.g. ELS EF9, farmers should contact Natural England before use on land in agri-environmental schemes)
  • Low or new infestations
  • Where application has been missed at the earlier timing due to poor weather
  • Any area where the most important factor is to prevent seed return for next year

Great Brome – between crop GS 24 and 30, ideally at the latter, and up to weed GS 32.

Meadow, Soft, Rye Bromes – between crop GS 30 and third node detectable (GS 33).

Common Couch/ Onion Couch -  between start of crop tillering (GS 21) and GS 39, and weed stage GS 25 to GS 32.

Volunteer Barley/ Italian Rye-grass/ Annual Meadow-grass - weed stage GS 25 to GS 32.

Black-grass/ Wild-oats/ Creeping Soft-grass/ Yorkshire Fog/ Black Bent - weed stage GS 25 to GS 32.

Cleavers – between crop main shoot and three tillers (GS 23) and GS 33, and up to 3 whorls of cleavers. For Cleavers >3whorls, add a half rate of fluoxypyr.
