Introduction

Mode of action

Latitude contains silthiofam, the first of a new generation of fungicides (the hindered silyl amide group) designed specifically for the control of take-all. It has a novel mode of action that disrupts fungal energy production by acting on cell respiration. It is specific to take-all and is highly active against the fungus at a low application rate.

The active ingredient is applied as a surface layer to the seed. Once in contact with the soil, it moves rapidly off the seed, but slowly through the profile, creating a zone of protection (see figure 1) around the developing roots of each seedling.  The active ingredient remains at the site of action, even if rainfall follows drilling. This early protection leads to better root development and a stronger plant, and delays disease build-up over the season (see figure 2).

Latitude works irrespective of the seed rate used. There is no delay in crop emergence and vigour is maintained.

Take-all decline

Silthiofam has no negative effects on the key beneficial organisms responsible for take-all decline.  It works in partnership with natural antagonists. Furthermore, it poses a low risk to other non-target species such as birds and earthworms, and has excellent operator safety.

Aids healthy root development

Better rooting increases nutrient uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. Improved water uptake also results, meaning crops can withstand late-season drought conditions more effectively.

Figure 1. Zone of protection around developing roots

Latitude actively delays primary infection from the take-all fungus in the soil from infecting newly developing roots. This allows better establishment and rooting. It reduces the level of take-all right through to grain fill (up to 8 months after drilling).

Reduces secondary symptom development

Latitude reduces root damage caused by take-all, and maintains root efficiency to absorb water and nutrients well into May/June. This reduces secondary symptoms such as stunting and whiteheads.

To maximise the benefits of using Latitude, it should be used together with appropriate cultural control measures.

Latitude is supplied by most Seed Suppliers and approved Mobile Treaters.  For further advice on take-all management refer to your agronomist.
