Dr Moss has served 40 years in weed research, largely on grass-weeds and especially black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides). Starting in 1975, following his BSc in Agriculture at Wye College in 1972, he worked at WRO, then Long Ashton Research Station, where he gained his PhD and, from 1990, at Rothamsted Research.
Stephen has given plenary, keynote and other presentations at major international conferences in the UK, the US, Australia, Iran and Belgium.
He has published 208 research papers, book chapters and technical reports, and contributed to over 282 articles in the popular farming press. Over the last 20 years he has given numerous talks to farmers, consultants and agrochemical company technical staff. This emphasis on active knowledge transfer was emphasized by the award of the RASE Technology Award in 2009.
As well as supervising PhD students, he has been external examiner for PhD projects at the Universities of Reading, Manitoba, Western Australia, Uppsala, Ghent and London (Imperial College).
Stephen now works at Rothamsted part-time, actively managing ongoing research projects, on herbicide resistance, weed agro-ecology and integrated control strategies. He was Secretary of the UK Weed Resistance Action Group and a UK representative on the European Herbicide Resistance Working Group. He now runs a private consultancy, Stephen Moss Consulting.
